Goodreads is every published Author’s sacred space. Reviews, events, videos – and your Goodreads Author blog all condensed under one roof.
However, tedious formatting is a major hurdle in composing a Goodreads blog post. Get an eyeful of the HTML codes required for italics, bold, paragraph, underline and image!
Are all authors techno-savvy? I’m not.
So, how do you bypass the HTML formatting on Goodreads? How to share posts from WordPress to Goodreads? Here’s my method …
Many authors are bloggers – (just as every blogger is a potential author). However, your Goodreads followers / fans/ friends are not necessarily your WordPress blog followers. Yet, you want them to enjoy selective WordPress posts – especially pertaining to your book anecdotes, writing tips, book launch images etc.
1] Select the WordPress post you wish to share to Goodreads Author blog. (I’m assuming you already have a Goodreads Author profile!)
2] The selected WordPress post may have a combination of words, images and videos. Click ‘Edit post’ on WordPress.
3] WordPress give you 2 options. Your post can be seen as ‘Visual’ format (as in image above, right upper corner arrow) or ‘HTML’ format (current image, right hand upper corner arrow). Select HTML format.
4] Select all and click ‘Copy’.
5] Now go to your Goodreads Author profile on Goodreads website.
6] Scroll down to Author blog. Click on ‘Add new post’.
7] In the space which springs up, ‘Paste’ the copied content from WordPress blog post. Click ‘Publish’ .
8] Voila! Your entire post including images, bold, italics, underline, paragraph spacing gets published on your Goodreads blog.
Simple, isn’t it?
‘There’s nothing as elusive as the obvious’.
Was this tip helpful? Do you have Goodreads tips to share with fellow authors?
Nice, but Goodreads even allows you to syndicate your whole blog on it so that every new post you publish gets shared on it automatically. Just needs one time set up, and is easy.

That’s true. But I cover a wide spectrum of topics on m WordPress blog. But Goodreads blogs would be much zoomed down to book and writing related topics. Wouldnt want to flood Goodreads followers with technical, Haiku posts!

Hmm, that makes sense. That’s why I keep my tech. blog separate. Several friends have suggested that i should publish my tech posts on my personal blog to attract greater audience. But i prefer keeping them separate.
My personal blog has posts about books or my personal musings or announcements about my books. So I have just linked it whole to goodreads.

You could have clubbed tech posts under a ‘Category’ labelled as ‘Technology’, so that all posts come under one blog.
I started blogging with an intent to use as a platform for launching my book. So I kept the home page directed to my novel nd then added categories for various other areas of interest like Spirituality, Random musings , Pencil sketches etc.
The main advantage was that I didn’t need to collect followers/ friends over and over. All follower bloggers get directed to the same single website.
They are always free to read a post which piques their interest or ignore a post that doesn’t pique their interest.

Right, but I don’t think many of my readers on TechnoTreats would be interested in reading books. When searching for a phone etc. people tend to jump from blog to blog trying to collect info they need.
However, if I feel some particular post on TechnoTreats can be of interest to general readers, I reblog it on jyotiarora.com
the separate category would have served had i blogged about tech. once in a while. But i publish at least two posts on TechnoTreats per week. My author’s blog would have become cluttered with gadgets 😀
Earlier, my personal blog too was separate from my website. Finally I have moved my website to self-hosted WordPress and joined my blog there. It wasn’t as hard as I had feared it would be 🙂

Twice a week is quite a significant bulk. In that case a tech blog seems to make sense.
Reblogging is a great idea too. Does self-hosted site give you more GBs?

Space depends upon the hosting pack you buy. Mine is unlimited storage. A self hosted wordpress blog can be managed just as easily as wordpres.com blog. It has similar user interface. But it has more freedom. you can use all sorts of plugins to make site better. besides, it looks more professional to have a url without ‘wordpress’ in it.
However, self hosted sites are more prone to attack. so it is a must to have security plugins.

I see. Pros and cons, as usual.
Does the WordPress support forum offer you help and tips if you need them? Or do they treat you as an alien?

You need to make an account on wordpress.org. The wordpress.com account does not work for forums of self hosted blogs. I have not yet made an org account. If I needed an answer, I googled and usually found what I was looking for on net or wordpress forums. Mostly i searched to find suitable plugins.
There are excellent security plugins that make the blog highly secure. And you can migrate your existing wordpress.com blog and its followers to your new site.
If you don’t want to go into all that, you can just buy a domain name and use it on this blog.
Also, if you plan to go self hosted, don’t buy a domain name first and then look for hosting. Buy hosting first and they will give you the domain name free or almost free.
Also, once you change the domain name, you’d also need to pay wordpress.com to redirect your old links to new, at least for a year. If anyone uses links of this wordpress.com blog, they will be automatically redirected to new blog.
Hehe, as I recently made the shift, I love talking about it 😀

My head is spinning! I need to take a deep breath and re-read all of that. 🙂
I had 2 questions:
1] Have you noticed that hits increase markedly in self hosted vs WordPress blogs? Perhaps WordPress has a calculating error that masks some hits.
2] Self hosted limits your website subscriptions to email or RSS. It no more permits WordPress bloggers to merely press ‘Follow’. Is that a myth or reality?
I usually don’t prefer email subscriptions to blogs, since the newly published blogposts clog up my email space. Instead, I prefer to see newly published blogposts on Reader.

I wasn’t aware of GoodreadsAuthor blog. Thanks for sharing the info. Is it meant only for published authors?

Blog is available only to Goodreads Authors (which means your book has to be in the markets in print form AND your user profile should be linked with Author Program).
However, if the book isn’t yet published, you can still share your writings with friends/ followers via ‘My writing’
Try this link: https://www.goodreads.com/story
Or else, sign in to your Goodreads profile, then scroll down to ‘Author Program’ at bottom of the page. It will take you to the instructions for published and waiting-to-be-published authors.
Cheers and All the best!

Haha. I tend to procrastinate too.
I write down entire blogposts in my mind – and then wince over typing them out. Wish I had a steno, an assistant and a PR agent. Till such time as luxury comes in search of us, we have to toil over the nitty gritties. 🙂

Thank you for this.. very useful as I am very bad about doing anything with Goodreads… it seems very user unfriendly including uploading books etc.. but I will have to steel myself.

I agree. Even adding photos in group threads is a pain on Goodreads. But it is a great website for authors and readers.

Yes, adding images was the biggest obstacle on Goodreads. Fortunately, the hurdle forced me to think of alternate ways until I finally got an epiphany via WordPress edit.

Brilliant information, Dr, Sweety! I currently have all my blog posts going there but there way too many of them and some are not really Goodreads type material. I may do it this way from now on! Thanks so much.

Interesting! I have always loved the stuff on good reads. It is pretty well compiled and elegant site. Nice to know that they have an option for author blog. Even quora allows that option.
